Beschreibung
The seminar will read and discuss central shorter texts by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, and Herman Melville within the context of 19th-century U.S.-American culture, especially in relation to the popular 'culture of horror'. On the basis of some secondary readings, class discussions and presentations will be concerned with the political, cultural and also aesthetic aspects of the sensationalist and affective agenda of the 'dark romantics.'
Requirements: Basic knowledge about methods and concepts in literary analysis and cultural studies (B-module, study skills) are required. Regular attendance and active participation will be considered as a necessary preparation for a graded term paper; for ungraded credits short presentations and / or class discussions will have to be prepared.
A schedule with readings assignments, as well as a list of secondary texts, will be made available via the course page on StudIP some weeks before classes start.
