Beschreibung

The combination of documentary photography and textual commentary has been used as an instrument of social criticism and investigation in the U.S. since the beginning of the 20. Century. Especially during the 1930s depression era, hybrid text-image forms of documentary 'essays' or books flourished, and help to establish a highly effective, yet also ambivalent, modern documentary aesthetics which resonated with other forms and genres in modernist art and criticism.

This project seminar will look at four examples of the U.S.-American tradition in 'documentary fiction':

Jacob Rijs "How the Other Half Lives"
Margaret Bourke-White / Erskine Caldwell "You have Seen Their Faces"
James Agee / Walker Evans "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men"
Richard White "12 Million Black Voices"

Students will form groups and select one of the texts as the core of their research project.
Each project will consist of several connected steps and tasks. ranging from collecting factual and basic information about the specific text and the images it contains, about their authors and photographers involved in the production / composition of the texts, but also contextual information about the motivation and objectives of the documemntaries, as well as their reception and critical discussion.
Moreover, all participants of the project groups are asked to also develop certain focus questions and topics for the close analysis and interpretation of specific aspects of the four main texts.
These will be the main points for the final presentations of the research work during the final phase of the seminar.
The seminar will thus proceed in three consecutive stages:
• introduction and input phase (definitions, concepts, historical development and cultural significance)
• research phase (study, referencing and documenting sources, developing focus questions, mainly group work with individual counseling sessions)
• presentation phase (developing group presentation, preparing visuals and text scrips for presentation, presenting and discussing final results)
A detailed schedule will be uploaded prior to the seminar, as well as a bibliography of selected texts and visual material.
