“Deadly Forced Labour in Karya. German Occupation and the Holocaust in Greece”
German-Greek Youth Meeting
Project Context:
Karya is a small railway station on the old rail line from Athens to Thessaloniki in Central Greece.
In 1943 the German occupation administration brought 300 Jewish men from Thessaloniki to this
site to build a passing track next to the existing single-track rail line. Today we don’t know the exact
number of how much died at the construction site among the forced labourers, but some of the
survivors were later deported to the extermination camp Auschwitz.
The german engineer Rösler photographed the construction work and created a photo album. After
his death, the album ended up at a flea market where it was bought by a greek collector. He was
able to find three survivors of the camp. The photos (ca. 80 pictures) are unique for Greece. They
show an aspect of the Holocaust and Nazi forced labour that is best known from locations in
Eastern Europe: the practice of deadly forced labour as part of plundering the occupied territories.
The project aims to raise the german and greek public’s awareness of Nazi crimes in Greece and to
contribute to research on the history of the Nazi occupation. To this end, the partners are preparing a
travelling exhibition based on the Karya photographic collection that will be shown in Germany and
Greece.
International Youth Meeting:
Part 1 March 30th - 6th of April 2023, Thessaloniki and Karya in Greece.
2-3 online preparation meetings in late February-March
During the youth meeting, german and greek students will contribute to the analogue and digital
exhibition by documenting the historical site of Karya.
They will have the opportunity to take part in the on-site prospection work conducted on the
historical site of Karya by the Interdisciplinary Working Group on Conflict Landscapes, University
of Osnabrück, led by Prof. Dr. Christoph Rass. The prospection involves using geoinformatic and
historical approaches in order to document and reconstruct the possible transformations of Karya.
The tasks involve assisting with a spherical camera for 360-degree images, drone-based
photography, 3D LiDAR scans and data visualization with geographic information systems (QGIS)
and 3D processing software (Cloud Compare, Artec3D, Planlauf).
Another important part of the project will be conducting life-story and semi-structured interviews
with the owner of the photo album Mr. Assael and eye-witnesses in Karya. Furthermore, the
students will collect ideas on how to present the historical contents in digital exhibitions and social
networks in order to make them more accessible to a broader audience. The youth meeting will be
complemented by excursions to the sites of forced labour and Holocaust in Thessaloniki.
Part 2 early August 2024 in Berlin.
The second part of the youth meeting will take place around the exhibition opening that is
scheduled on 7 August 2024 to mark the 80th anniversary of the last Auschwitz transport from
Thessaloniki. The youth meeting will be held at the Nazi Forced Labour Documentation Centre in
Berlin.
Participants: 7 BA or MA students from Osnabrück and 7 students from Thessaloniki (history,
sociology, archaeology and other relevant disciplines). We will give priority to the students that
would like to participate in both parts of the project.
Organisers: The International Youth Meeting Centre in the Nazi Forced Labour Documentation
Centre is located on the grounds of an almost completely intact former forced labour camp in
Berlin. Since 2015 it has organised international programs on the topic of NS-forced labour for
school children, students and educators from all over the world.
The project is organised in cooperation with the Interdisciplinary Working Group on Conflict
Landscapes (IAK) at the University of Osnabrück, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki,
Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.
Costs: The costs for the flight, accommodation, food and program in Greece and Germany will be
covered by the International Youth Meeting Centre.
Credit Points: The participation on the international youth meeting is elligible for ECTS-credits as
exkursion at the Historisches Seminar, Universität Osnabrück.
