U.S. Presidential Elections 2020: Make Democracy Great Again!? (Project Seminar)

Beschreibung

On November 3 2020 the U.S. presidential and congressional elections will take place. The outcome of these elections will decide which course U.S. domestic and international politics will take for the next four years. This years’ election––maybe even more than previous ones––is viewed as especially contested and decisive, as it determines whether the Republican Donald Trump will be reelected as the leader of the so-called ‘Free World,’ or whether the American public will vest their trust in his still-to-be-determined contestant. In light of this historical moment, Osnabrück’s American studies team has set up a project seminar that focuses on the 2020 presidential election. With this project seminar, students have the opportunity to follow, investigate, and debate the election itself, as well as its related processes, events and media coverages. This will ideally involve a deep understanding of or research into U.S. institutions, the formalities of the election process, and the political and legal implications of this year’s result.

The seminar will conclude in an “Election Night” on Nov. 3; a student-organized event on the night of the election, where fellow students and the wider public can witness and discuss the presidential election first hand. Students who participate in this seminar will be expected to organize at least one event or activity for the “Election Night.” Those who are interested in participating should be aware that this seminar is distinctly project-oriented and that students will need to invest a good amount of time and labor, while being flexible in the when and the how of these investments. This also means that there will be no ordinary syllabus or weekly sessions, that the individual sessions will be structured so as to respond to the participants’ immediate needs and plans, and that the seminar as a whole will last well into the Winter Semester 2020/21. In the first session on the 10.04.20 we will work on a syllabus that will reflect the participants’ interests and their temporal commitments.

This course is primarily addressed to students who are enrolled in the Masters of Arts “English and American Studies” and/ or “Literature and Culture in Europe.” Those eligible can take this seminar as the compulsory internship as specified in the respective Prüfungsordnung. Bachelor students or students of other master programs who are interested in taking part in this project are welcome to contact Irina Brittner (ibrittner@uos.de), in order to inquire into whether and how participation or an accreditation could be possible.
