NOTE: Given the room size, the expected number of students and current regulations, this lecture will be an ONLINE-LECTURE only. It will be organized in an asynchronous manner with pre-recorded presentations.

In this lecture we will trace the beginnings of the English Language and discover how it turned from a language that looks a lot more like Latin or German into the language we all know today.
We will look at why and how we know what English looked earlier and find out whether there is actual evidence? And how much is just guesswork?
For each period of English (Old, Middle, EarlyModern) we will discuss the various linguistic particularities, discover important extra- and intralinguistic influences, and witness the development of linguistic changes in the language system.

Please note:
This course is especially designed for 2CP students in order to complete the V2 module (BA) or the L3 module (master). The lecture finishes with a short written exam, more details regarding the course requirements will be announced in the first session.

Students who need 4CP need to register for one of the other V2-seminars offered. To clarify, this course, History of the English Language, does not provide the opportunity to obtain 4CP.
