In this seminar we will have look at how language and society interacts. Why do we speak the way we speak? In which respect do speakers of one language differ and why? Sociolinguistics looks at factors such as social class, age, gender, social networks and others in order to explain how and why speaker (subconsciously) select specific variants from the vast array of different words, accents, structures and even languages available to them.
