Beschreibung

Whenever we speak face to face we often also involve (consciously or subconsciously) our hands (or other body parts) to convey, support or illustrate meaning. There is a growing interest in the role of gestures in language use and the importance of gestures from a linguistic viewpoint is highly debated - after all language does work without gestures, doesn't it?
In this seminar we will discuss the role of gestures in language use. We will start out by defining what gestures are and which different types of gestures we can identify. We will analyze gestures using approaches from various linguistic disciplines, such as cognitive linguistics, conversation analysis, communication studies, psycholinguistics,... After discussing the required readings theoretically, we will put our newly gained knowledge to test and analyze gestures in class.

PLEASE NOTE:
I offer a second (identical) "Language and Gestures" - seminar this semester, Thursdays 10-12. Check which course fits your timetable better when selecting your preferences.
