The Comparative BioCognition Research Group (Prof. Dr. Simone Pika) of the Institute of Cognitive Science at Osnabrück University invites applications for

to be filled as soon as possible for a period of 3 years.

Description of Responsibilities:
The position involves participation in the research and teaching activities of the Comparative BioCognition group at Osnabrueck University in the domain of nonhuman animals’ cognition, communication and ecology. The core of the work will be on cognitive skills of chimpanzees and the physiology and chemical ecology of insects used to tend their wounds. The research associate will both contribute to ongoing long-term data collection efforts and develop his/her own research questions within the scope of the broader focus on medical cognition, physiology and chemical ecology.
The project is a cooperation between Prof. Dr. Simone Pika (https://www.comparative-biocognition.de/) from the Osnabrück University and Dr. Erik Frank (https://www.biozentrum.uni-wuerzburg.de/zoo3/team/frank/) from the Department of Animal Ecology and Tropical Biology, University of Würzburg.

The position allows for further scientific qualification (Ph.D/habilitation).

The position involves teaching Cognitive Science courses at B.Sc. and M.Sc. levels.

Required Qualifications:

• An academic degree (Master/Diploma) in Biology, Evolutionary  Anthropology, Psychology, Cognitive Science or related fields and a strong background in insect physiology, chemical ecology, or cognition.
• Salient expertise in conducting statistical analyses using R, LMM’s and GLMM’s or Bayesian Statistics
• Good written and spoken English skills

Desired skills:
The ideal candidate has

• experience in physiological, insect rearing, chemical or behavioral analyses, and demonstrates eagerness for developing his/her skills in the other
• experience in carrying out behavioral observations and collecting systematic data on insects, physiological and chemical markers, in free living animals
• the willingness, physical and psychological ability to conduct ecology field work in Africa across several months and to conduct extensive chemical analyses (gas-chromatography and mass-spectrometry) over multiple stays in Würzburg
• strong social skills, affinity to collaborative work and the ability to work in an intercultural environment
• and basic spoken French skills
