Juan Felipe Ortiz-Riomalo

I am interested in the research and practice of environmental governance, with a focus on participatory processes and methods, and their potential to shape the relevant values (morals and preferences) and beliefs that underpin prosocial behaviour and collective action. I aim to contribute to the analysis, design, and implementation of participatory, polycentric governance systems that foster the skills and capacities for free, autonomous, and solidary decision-making in the face of complex social-environmental challenges.  For my research, I have relied on the Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) and the Socio-Ecological Systems (SES) frameworks to integrate and analyse insights from systematic literature reviews, semi-structured interviews, surveys, comparative case studies, and economic experiments. My work has been in Colombia, Germany, Peru and Uganda (ongoing).
