Communication
Information for students on communicating with members of the working group
General inquiries
For general enquiries that do not relate to a specific course or are directed to a specific member of staff, please always contact the Chair's secretariat first at the following email address:
- Contact information etc. for general enquiries and our secretariat can be found here on our website.
- Please always refer to the information provided by the university or the examination offices (e.g. examination regulations), the Department of History (e.g. study office, examination board) as well as the NGHM website and especially the information on specific courses on StudIP before making an inquiry.
Contact with staff members
- If your request concerns a specific person or course, please contact the responsible staff member directly. Please follow the instructions on this page.
- The current contact details of all team members can be found on the profile pages on our website or in the information on the respective courses on StudIP; information on office hours can be found via StudIP.
On the NGHM website and the StudIP pages for our courses you will find telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and room numbers as well as further information on key areas of work, courses, office hours and current projects etc.
Consultation hours
Consultation hours with staff members of the Chair of Modern History and Historical Migration Research can only be booked via the booking system in StudIP booking system. Please book an appointment in good time and prepare your request so that we can use the time effectively.
- Consultation hours always take place in person.
- Spontaneous visits without prior appointment are not possible.
- If you are unable to use your appointment, please release it immediately for other students via StudIP.
Response times
We always endeavor to answer your emails within two to three working days.
Please note:
- E-mails received on Friday afternoons or at weekends are usually not processed until the following week.
- Response times may be longer during lecture-free periods and during a research semester.
- For urgent matters relating to an ongoing course, please contact the relevant lecturer directly.
- In the case of longer absences, you will receive an automatic reply with information on substitution arrangements.
If you have not received a reply after a week, please ask - sometimes individual messages are overlooked in the flood of emails that reach us every day.
Tips for professional email communication
To ensure that your inquiry is processed quickly, please note the following tips:
- Subject line: Formulate a clear, meaningful subject line (e.g. "Request for topic assignment for Master's thesis" or "Question about proseminar on displaced persons")
- Salutation: Use a formal salutation (Prof. Dr., Dr., Mr./Mrs.)
- Sender: Use your university email address (@uni-osnabrueck.de or @uos.de)
- Content: Formulate your request clearly and precisely. Include relevant information (degree program, semester, matriculation number for administrative questions)
- Signature: End with a polite greeting and your full name
Please note
- As a rule, we do not process inquiries that you can already answer with information provided by Osnabrück University (e.g. examination regulations etc.), that you can find in the documents for your courses (e.g. syllabus) or that you can find on the course pages in StudIP or on our websites.
- Please also note the responsibilities at Osnabrück University (for example, we are not the Examinations Office, not the History Office and not the History Examination Board).
- You can find information on responsibilities in the context of examination and self-administration on the pages of the Department of History.
