Prof. Dr. Sören Segger-Piening, LL.M. Eur.

Prof. Dr. Sören Segger-Piening, LL.M. Eur. was born in November 1985 in Freiburg im Breisgau. After attending school in Hanover and the United States (exchange year with high school diploma), he began studying law and European law as supplementary studies at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg in the winter semester of 2005. In the summer semester of 2010, he completed his studies with the First Law Examination and an additional qualification in European law. From October 2010 to May 2013, he continued his work as a research assistant at the Chair of Civil Law, European Commercial Law, Private International and Procedural Law and Comparative Law (Prof. Dr. Oliver Remien, Würzburg), which he had already begun as a student assistant, and wrote his doctoral thesis on ‘The Amicus Curiae in International Business Law’. He then completed his legal clerkship in the district of the Oberlandesgericht Düsseldorf, including stations at the Federal Cartel Office (procedural law department). After having successfully passed his second state law examination in 2015, he worked as a lawyer at Kapellmann Rechtsanwälte in Düsseldorf until 2016, specialising in private construction law. This was followed by a post-doctoral phase at Oliver Remien's chair in Würzburg with a study visit to the Coase-Sandor Institute at the University of Chicago Law School (summer 2017) and the completion of his Master's degree in European Law with a thesis on the free movement of goods (December 2017). Based on his habilitation thesis on construction contracts, the Faculty of Law at the University of Würzburg awarded him a teaching qualification for the subjects of civil law, civil procedural law, European private law, international private law and procedural law, comparative law as well as law and economics in July 2024. From October 2023 to September 2024, he was an interim professor (Lehrstuhlvertreter) at the European Legal Studies Institute at the University of Osnabrück. In May 2024, he was appointed (list position no. 1) to the W3 professorship for Civil Law, Private International and European Law and Procedural Law as well as Comparative Law at the European Legal Studies Institute at the University of Osnabrück, which he took up in October 2024. Prof. Dr. Segger-Piening is married and father to a son born in May 2023.
