Profile

The term "Financial Science" originally referred to the administrative study of public finances. Nowadays, the term is used much more broadly, namely in the sense of an economic analysis of the public sector (government revenue and expenditure). In international usage, the term "Public Economics" has therefore become widely accepted.

The task of the department is to represent Public Economics in teaching and research at Osnabrück University. It takes into account, that modern public economics is based on microeconomic methods and that the topics of tax efficiency and tax policy are of central importance. As part of the economics specialization area, the department therefore also has close links to business administration (microeconomic methods, corporate taxation, regulation of private companies).
