Mission Statement and Evolvement

Welcome to the homepage of the Department of Management Support and Information Systems (MSWI) (retired since April 1, 2024)!

The MSWI department was established in 1994 as the second Information Systems department at Osnabrück University and has been led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bodo Rieger until his retirement on March 31, 2024. From the very beginning, the integration of the emerging research domains of Decision Support Systems (DSS), Data Warehousing (later Business Intelligence, BI), Knowledge-Based Systems (KBS) and Data Mining (DM) or Artificial Intelligence (AI), Knowledge Management (KM), as well as Business Cybernetics (System Dynamics) was further developed in research and teaching under the umbrella of the overarching domain of Management Support Systems (MSS).

Together with Prof. Dr. Peter Stahlknecht, who has held the inaugural chair in Information Systems since 1981, and Prof. Dr. Thomas Witte, who early on reoriented the traditional business administration focus on production economics toward modern Production Management and Information Systems (PMWI), the Institute of Information Management and Information Systems Engineering (IMU) was established in 1995 within the School of Business Administration and Economics at the University of Osnabrück. This laid the foundation for independent Information Systems degree programs based on the Bachelor’s/Master’s model, which, beginning in winter 2001/02, supplemented the previous diploma program—particularly through practice-oriented project-based learning with intensive practical collaborations with regional and national companies in business and administration. Prof. Dr. Frank Teuteberg (Accounting and Information Systems, UWI) additionally joined the IMU-Institute  in 2004, furthermore by the second generation: Prof. Dr. Uwe Hoppe (Organization and Information Systems, BOW, and successor of Prof. Dr. Stahlknecht), Prof. Dr. Oliver Thomas (Information Management and Information Systems, IMWI, and PMWI successor), and Prof. Dr. Sofia Schöbel ( Digital Innovation and Information Systems, DIWI, and MSWI successor), as well as the upcoming successor for BOW, already in third generation ...
