South-South migration, including Chinese migration to South Africa

Workshop with Prof. Dr. Ana Deumert & Nkululeko Mabandla (both University of Cape Town)

Ana Deumert is a Professor of Linguistics at the University of Cape Town. Her research is located within the broad field of sociolinguistics and has a strong transdisciplinary focus. Her current work explores the use of language and art in global political movements as well as the contributions decolonial thought can make to sociolinguistic theory. She is a recipient of the Neville Alexander Award for the Promotion of Multilingualism (2014) and the Humboldt Research Award (2016).

Nkululeko Mabandla is a Lecturer at the Department of Sociology at the University of Cape Town. His research interests include the fields of settler colonialism, the anti-colonial archive and the black radical tradition. His current research looks at transnational Chinese traders in South Africa's rural towns. This work links his interests in land and the political economy with work on settler colonialism and globalization studies.
