Helge Schwierz is Acting Professor of Sociological Theory at the University of Hamburg. His key research areas include social and political theory, theories of radical democracy, citizenship and solidarity, social movements, racism, and migration studies. He gained his PhD at IMIS for his thesis entitled “Migration und radikale Demokratie” ( transcript 2019). Most recently, he led the international research project Enacting Citizenship and Solidarity in Europe »From Below«: Local Initiatives, Intersectional Strategies, and Transnational Networks. He is also co-speaker of the DFG network Poststructuralist Protest and Movement Studies. Helge Schwiertz is currently working on his habilitation project “Social Theory and Migration Research”. His recent publications on this topic include: Figures of Migration in the Classical Sociologies of Marx, Weber, and Du Bois ( Sociological Theory 2024), Foucauldian Perspectives on Migration and Society: The Epistemological-political Grids of “People” and “Population” ( European Journal of Social Theory 2024), and Social Theory and Migration Research in Dialog ( European Journal of Social Theory 2025).
