Prof. Dr. Michael Oehler

Michael Oehler has been Professor of Music and Media Technology at the Institute of Musicology and Music Education at Osnabrück University since 2017. He is the director of MTDML and the Research Center for Music and Media Technology (FMT).

His research focuses on Acoustical Extended Reality, immersive and collaborative music applications in virtual and mixed reality, artificial intelligence and computer audition, music perception, and the development and investigation of new forms of musical interaction and communication.

Oehler studied Systematic Musicology, Linguistics and Phonetics, as well as Business Administration, at the University of Cologne. In 2007, he received his doctorate in Systematic Musicology from the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media. He subsequently worked there as a research associate and led the project group responsible for cataloguing and digitizing the Music of Man Archive.

From 2011 to 2014, he was a professor at the Media School of the MHMK Macromedia University of Applied Sciences in Cologne. He then held the professorship in Musical Acoustics at University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf until 2017. Professional experience at Sony Music Entertainment in New York and as a partner in the technology company IAMP Solutions complements his academic profile with expertise in music production, technological development, and knowledge transfer.

Oehler is a member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES), the German Acoustical Society (DEGA), the German Musicological Society (GfM), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Within the German Society for Music Psychology (DGM), he served as treasurer from 2010 to 2013 and as president from 2014 to 2021.
