Information for Applicants

How can I apply?

We would be delighted if you would decide to apply for the Master's in International Migration and Intercultural Relations! Here you will find the most important steps on the way to your application:

In order to maintain the high quality and personal atmosphere of the IMIB-MA, the face-to-face program is limited to 30 places and takes place exclusively full-time. Your application is subject to a selection process in which other criteria such as personal motivation, relevant practical experience and non-academic achievements such as civic engagement count in addition to your Bachelor's grade. This makes it possible to take other individual qualities of applicants into account in addition to their academic performance.

Application procedure

German nationals with a German general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) apply directly via the Osnabrück University  online portal. The same applies to international applicants with German certificates (Bildungsinländer). The deadline for applications has been extended this year: The application deadline is July 15, 2026.

For applicants with foreign certificates, different application conditions apply in some cases. Your application must be submitted via  UniAssist by June 15, 2026 , as more processing time is required. You must also provide proof of sufficient German language skills. Please note that the deadline extension does not apply to the application procedure via uni-assist e.V. The application procedure via uni-assist e.V. has already ended.

You will need the following documents for your application:

Admission is based on an individual assessment by the admissions committee. You are therefore welcome to apply even if your degree cannot be directly assigned to one of the disciplines listed below. The final assessment will be made at the time of application.

As a rule, admission is possible if you have a Bachelor's degree in one of the following subjects: Education Science, Ethnology, European Studies, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, Law and Religious Studies, Linguistics, Social Work, Sociology and Comparative Cultural Studies.

English language skills (B1) are deemed to be proven if

  • corresponding English language skills were already required as an access requirement for the previous Bachelor's degree program, or
  • an English-language undergraduate or postgraduate degree course was successfully completed, or
  • English was the language of the education system at the time of obtaining the higher education entrance qualification, or
  • successfully passed a language test at level B1 (possible language tests can be found  here). If you do not have any of the English language certificates mentioned there, the selection committee will decide. For example, the Abitur certificate will be used as a recognition criterion.

English language skills at level B1 are available in the following cases

  • six years of successfully completed school English
  • five years of successfully completed language lessons (second foreign language)

Applicants who neither have a German university entrance qualification nor have obtained their university degree at a German university must also have sufficient knowledge of the German language at level C1 (possible language tests can be found  here).

An application with language level B2 is possible if the C1 certificate is submitted by 30.09.

To "improve" your grade from your Bachelor's certificate, you can add further information about your qualifications to your application. You will find corresponding fields in the digital application portal. There are 0.2 grade point "bonuses" for each of the following three criteria

  1. Letter of motivation:
The application can be accompanied by a letter of motivation (3,000-5,000 characters) in which you describe your academic or non-academic experience and interests in the field of migration. In addition, it is recommended that the letter of motivation clarifies the relevant references of the BA program to our IMIB Master's program and relates the academic and non-academic activities and experiences to it.
  2. Bachelor's thesis:
Additional points are awarded if you have written a Bachelor's thesis on a migration-related topic that was graded at least good.
  3. Other achievements:
Other activities and achievements related to migration can also be taken into account. These include relevant internships, voluntary work, publications, prizes, awards or similar.
