International Relations & Peace and Conflict Research
Profile
How does the international system work? How can armed conflicts be prevented and ended? How are peace and security possible? How can international cooperation succeed? What role do power, norms and regulatory structures play? Although these fundamental questions were already relevant at the time of the "Peace of Westphalia" (1648) in Osnabrück and Münster, they remain topical in the 21st century due to global crises and a world order in upheaval. In teaching and research, the department therefore deals with theories of international relations and peace and conflict research, with questions of global and European regulation and security policy as well as with approaches to conflict management, peacebuilding and reconciliation. The members of the department are also active at the Center for the Study of Conflict & Peace .
The production of mobility options: Migration and border management in the context of the Eastern Partnership of the European Union (Subproject B2, SFB Production of Migration)
Project leader: Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schneckener,
Project staff: Isabel Hoffmann, Katharina Kleynmans.
Duration: 1.4.2024-31.12.2027.
Funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
The sub-project examines the production of mobility options in the course of migration and border management between the European Union (EU) and two Eastern European states (Ukraine and Moldova). It examines negotiation processes for the establishment and design of regulatory infrastructures. In the process, migration-related categorizations and attributions are (re-)produced, which are translated into entry, return and control practices towards individuals and groups of people. For this sub-project, regulatory infrastructures are understood to be of four types: (i) legally binding agreements between the EU and the EaP states, (ii) politically binding agreements, (iii) multilateral policy networks and (iv) operational cooperation formats.
