IJVO Lecture with Dr. Benedikt Schmitz

The next IJVO Lecture will be held on 6 May 2026 at 18:00 (s.t.) by Dr. Benedikt Schmitz, LL.M. on the topic: "Other countries, other customs? On the autonomous interpretation of the choice of law barrier in Article 6 Rome I Regulation". He is Assistant Professor of Private International Law and Comparative Contract Law at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. In his lecture, he will highlight the autonomous interpretation of European private international and civil procedural law as an essential element in ensuring uniformity of decisions. This is particularly relevant when the content of a conflict rule has not yet been the subject of a referral to the ECJ. He will deal with the choice of law rule of Article 6(2) of the Rome I Regulation, focusing in particular on the so-called "Dutch method" of separate connection.
The event will take place at the European Legal Studies Institute in room 44/E03.

Osnabrück delegation at the GJZ conference

The annual conference of the Gesellschaft junge Zivilrechtswissenschaft (GJZ) took place at EBS Law School this year under the overarching theme of "Blind Spots in Civil Law".

A large number of young academics from our schools were also present and covered a wide range of topics in six brilliant lightning talks by Patricia Kainka, Leo Kohz, Colin Partington, Philip Steitz, Tabea Stolte and Geelke Wemjes, among others: from pandect science to rainbow families and digital law.

After the GJZ is before the GJZ: we are now looking forward to the next annual conference, which will be held at Osnabrück University from September 23-26, 2026 for the first time since 2009. Save the date!
