Service

The Biology department is committed to the future-oriented management and sustainable use of research data. In line with the  FAIR principles and the  guidelines of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the RDM team aims to optimize the structuring, documentation and sharing of research data.

We offer the following services:

Do you have any questions?

Please contact the  RDM team or simply drop by (38/216)!

  • Data management plan (DMP)
  • Data formats and metadata standards
  • Technologies for collaborative work
  • Software tools in the department and at the UOS
  • Use of electronic lab notebooks (e.g. openBIS)
  • Data archiving and publication (repositories, e.g. OMERO)

Please also take a look at the information pages on the individual  core aspects of FDM.

Contact person

Please contact  Dr. Susanne Kunis for a consultation.

The Biology department offers free software for the management of research data for all employees. These are mainly the two software:

  •  OMERO for managing and editing microscopic image data and
  •  openBIS for keeping an electronic lab notebook (ELN) and managing the laboratory inventory.

The RDM team takes care of group onboarding, user administration, cross-group software settings, software updates and upgrades, integration of the software into the existing infrastructure and organizes seminars and workshops for different target groups.

Switching to openBIS

No problem!

We accompany your working group, from the creation of the accounts to the training of the group admins and the introduction of the entire group.

Please contact the  RDM team.

The RDM team of the Biology department offers various events for the two software  OMERO and  openBIS for different target groups, both independently and on request:

  • Courses for beginners and advanced users
  • Courses for technical assistants
  • Courses for new Bachelor and Master students
  • Training courses for group admins and entire working groups

Dates

Upcoming events will be announced in good time by email.

If you have any further requirements, please contact the  RDM team.

The Biology department offers its staff the free software  OMERO for managing image data. OMERO manages and archives image data in over 150 different formats on a central, secure image server with a database for metadata.

In its function as a  repository, OMERO also enables the  publication of image data. All image data are given persistent identifiers and can be cited in scientific articles.

Take a look at an  example of a data publication.

Procedure

  1. Requesting an OMERO group for your data publication
  2. Depositing the data in OMERO

  3. Depositing the metadata in OMERO

  4. Requesting a data DOI

For more information or if you have a specific publication request, please contact  Dr. Susanne Kunis.

The future of documentation in research lies in electronic lab notebooks (ELN). The Biology department therefore provides its employees with the ELN software  openBIS.

In order to facilitate digital documentation with openBIS in the laboratory, the use of tablets can be useful. Before purchasing your own devices, testing loaned devices can be a great help in deciding on the device model, optimal number and size (inches) or useful accessories.

In this context, the RDM team, in cooperation with the Biology IT team, offers various tablet rental devices including accessories.

Borrow

Come by, choose your tablets and accessories, determine a test period - done!.
