PD Dr. Cornelius Bachmann
After studying medicine at the University of Göttingen and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Dr. Cornelius Bachmann earned his doctorate at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich. He completed his specialist training in neurology at the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) in the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology and completed additional training in special pain therapy also in anesthesiology. In 2010, Dr. Bachmann received the German Advancement Award for Pain Research. In 2012, he habilitated at the University of Göttingen. In the same year, he was appointed senior chief physician of neurology at the Paracelsus Clinic in Osnabrück. In 2018, he founded the SomnoDiagnostics Therapy Center for Neurology, Pain Therapy, and Somnology.
Current research projects focus in particular on non-pharmacological treatment methods for restless legs syndrome (RLS), such as transcutaneous spinal direct current stimulation ( tcDCS), as well as possible side effects of state-of-the-art drug therapies for RLS, such as augmentation or nocturnal respiratory suppression, with the aim of optimizing and individualizing treatment.
Other scientific activities relate to the field of pain research, including the method of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and quantitative sensory testing (QST) and the effects on thermal and mechanical sensory perception. In this field of research, PD Dr. Bachmann was awarded the German Prize for Pain Research in 2010.
His sleep institute, Somnodiagnostics, currently performs around 3,150 polysomnographies per year, covering not only restless legs syndrome (RLS) but also the entire spectrum of other neurological sleep disorders such as sleep-related breathing and movement disorders, NREM parasomnias, REM sleep behavior disorders, hypersomnia, and narcolepsy, and provide extensive teaching and research material.
Another focus of clinical activity is cognitive disorders, primarily dementia such as Alzheimer's disease or neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease.
Joint project: Sleep data analysis (02/2025-02/2027), contract research SomnoDiagnostics PD Dr. med. Cornelius Bachmann, €25,000, (PI: Prof. Dr. Gordon Pipa)
This research project investigates the influence of opioid use on nocturnal respiratory parameters in RLS patients who have had to switch to opioid medication. This topic has received little to no attention in scientific research for this patient group, even though a link between nocturnal respiratory suppression and opioid use in pain management has been known for some time. The planned study is therefore the first scientific study to investigate this connection for RLS patients.
In addition, PD Dr. med. Cornelius Bachmann contributes his expertise in the form of teaching and active support for the student initiative “Sleep and Dream.”
