International Political Economy
Profile
The field of International Political Economy (IPE) deals with the dynamics of economic systems and the global economic order from a political science perspective. The basic premise is that "the economy" is politically constituted by social groups, discourses and institutions. These influence how wealth and power are produced and distributed on a global and national level. At Osnabrück University, IPE combines international and comparative perspectives in teaching and research.
Current research projects at the IPÖ Research Group focus on two main topics. The first concerns the politics of "financialization", which is shorthand for the rise of financial actors, interests and practices in the global political economy. A central object of study here is the role of development/promotional banking and other financial market actors in industrial and climate policy. The second concerns the political constitution of different "growth regimes" and their impact on international cooperation and geo-economic tensions both within the European Union and in the context of emerging powers.

At Osnabrück University, IPÖ is anchored in all political science degree programs and can be taken as an elective in the sociology modules. It introduces students to the study of modern capitalism from a historical, international and comparative perspective as well as to European economic and monetary integration. Further course content deals with power and conflicts in the (governance) of the global economy, the political economy of financial markets and lines of conflict in the ecological transformation.
The Research Group of International Political Economy currently consists of Prof. Dr. Daniel Mertens (Head of Department), Kardelen Günaydın (PhD student), Dr. Nils Stockmann (BMBF project "Climate Finance Society"), Mara Dankbar, Marenka Hänke, Jakob Jahns (student assistants) and Arjeta Gringmuth (secretariat).
