A field that bridges disciplines to unlock new possibilities : Cogni... what?

Although cognition has been studied for over two thousand years, cognitive science as a recognized academic discipline is relatively young. It developed around 1975 from converging research approaches in various disciplines, namely philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, linguistics and artificial intelligence (as part of computer science).

Cognitive science investigates how the brain processes information, how knowledge is built up and how intelligent systems function. From artificial intelligence to learning methods and the understanding of consciousness - the field is relevant wherever intelligent processes are involved. The aim is to understand not only how but also why we think, what distinguishes us from other living beings and how intelligent technologies can be designed.

From courageous beginnings to lasting success: the history of Cognitive Science in Osnabrück : A pioneer right from the start

The Bachelor, Master & PhD programs in Osnabrück are the first undergraduate degree programs in Cognitive Science to be offered in Germany. In the primarily method-oriented Bachelor's program, students acquire aBachelor of Science in Cognitive Science. The four-semester Master's program deals with phenomenological areas of cognition theoretically, empirically and through implementation. At the end of the Master's program, students can earn the degree of"Master of Science" in Cognitive Science. The doctoral program allows excellent students to conduct independent research on highly topical issues in cognitive science while being structured to complete a doctorate within three years. The degree awarded is the"Ph.D in Cognitive Science".

A unique degree program that produces exceptional graduates : Our degree program: International, interdisciplinary, individual

The DAAD-funded Cognitive Science degree program offers an internationally oriented, English-language education with the aim of attracting German and foreign students alike. It closes the gap between international demand and German requirements.

The interdisciplinary course combines the humanities, natural sciences and computer sciences. From linguistics and psychology to neuroscience and artificial intelligence, methods and findings are combined to gain a comprehensive understanding of cognitive processes and to simulate them using cognitive modeling.

Individual specialization options in the Master's degree and an obligatory year of project-based work allow students to set their own priorities and gain practical experience in the analysis and modelling of cognitive systems. The course promotes the integration of different research approaches, which have often existed separately in German cognitive science to date.
