Auditory Hallucinations in Inner Speech
Overview:
Auditory-verbal hallucinations (AVH), defined as experiences of hearing voices in the absence of an external stimulus, raise central philosophical questions, among others about the nature of hallucinations and the mechanisms underlying the sense of ownership of one's own mental events. Influential approaches claim that AVH are the result of a defect in the self-monitoring of episodes of inner speech. Contrary to this position, I will argue that inner speech cannot account for the heterogeneous phenomenology of AVH.
