Bad Beliefs and Echo Chambers
Overview:
People believe all sorts of things: that the sun will rise again tomorrow, that good is possible in the world, or that Angela Merkel is a reptiloid. Some of these beliefs stand up to critical scrutiny; others do not. In this project, funded by the Philipp Schwartz Initiative of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, we investigate in which respects beliefs can be judged as good or bad, to what extent we are responsible for our 'bad' (be it epistemic, be it moral) beliefs, and whether (some) epistemic duties (e.g. to form one's beliefs on the basis of reasons and evidence) can also be moral duties.
