FAQs

A distinction is made between

  • ungraded coursework,
  • graded examinations (e.g. written examinations, presentations, term papers, essays, oral examinations) and
  • final theses (Bachelor's/Master's thesis).

The form of the coursework or examinations can be found in the module descriptions.  To the regulations and module handbooks for the respective degree program.

You must register for and withdraw from examinations in  HISinOne - Student Administration by the deadline (up to one week before the examination). Please note that you may only take examinations after you have registered. If you miss the registration deadline, please contact your lecturer immediately. Under certain conditions, examination results can be added in individual cases.

The General Examination Regulations (APO) and the respective degree program and subject-specific examination regulations apply to all teacher training degree programs and the dual-subject Bachelor's degree program.

The Cognitive Science and Psychology degree programs have their own examination regulations.

All relevant information can be found on the page  Degree programs from A to Z.

You can find information on the various ways to  study abroad in the  study programs. In addition, each institute has a contact person who can advise you on the process, funding and credit transfer options.
A semester abroad (5th semester) is compulsory in the Bachelor's degree in Cognitive Science.
For every study-related stay abroad, you must inform the Examination Office. You can find the appropriate  form (PDF, 167 kB) here. You can send the completed form to the Examinations Office immediately after your return, but at the latest when you apply for your final documents. For statistical purposes, please submit the form even if you have not taken advantage of a stay abroad.

If you receive BAföG, you will be asked to submit a certificate of achievement in accordance with § 48 BAföG (form 5) after the 4th semester at the latest. You fill in the upper part of the form yourself, the lower part ("Only to be filled in by the educational institution!") will be completed for you at the Examinations Office. If you are studying Philosophy or Health Sciences, you will receive your certificate of achievement from the  PATMOS multi-subject examination office.

In any case, please allow some time for processing the certificate of achievement.

You can withdraw from the examination up to one week before the examination without giving a reason and without incurring any disadvantage. If you fall ill in the week before the examination and are unable to take part in the examination due to illness, you must have your inability to take the examination certified by a doctor. You can find the form to certify your inability to take the exam due to illness in the  download area. You are welcome to send the form completed by your doctor to the Examinations Office by email - as early as possible. You can find the relevant email addresses under  Contact and service times.

Please note that a certificate of incapacity for work (medical certificate) is not sufficient.

The following applies to Psychology: You can repeat modules you have already passed (a maximum of two) once to improve your grade. Please note that you can only "joker" modules that you have passed in full. You can find out whether modules are intended for a "joker" examination in your examination regulations under the paragraph "Repetition of examinations".

In the Bachelor of Cognitive Science degree program, passed compulsory modules can be repeated once to improve grades. This only applies to students who are studying according to the 2019 examination regulations.

In Philosophy, Health Sciences, Nursing Science and Cosmetology, an examination can be repeated to improve grades, provided it does not have to be used to repeat an examination that has been failed three times. (see § 14 para. 3 of the APO)

In the case of grade improvement, the better result will be included in the overall grade.

A grade improvement must be applied for at the Examinations Office; the relevant form can be found in the  download area.

The form must be submitted to the Examinations Office by the registration deadlines for examinations. Entry into the examination administration system is carried out by the Examinations Office, so you cannot register for the examination yourself in HisInOne, as your module is already deemed to have been passed.

First of all: You only have to provide evidence of hours of study (VP hours for short) for the Bachelor of Cognitive Science (10 VP hours) and the BA Psychology (40 VP hours). The verification is regulated differently for the two degree programs.

If you are studying Cognitive Science, we will provide you with a form that you can find in the  download area. You should take this with you to your test date and have your hours signed by the test supervisor. As soon as you have collected the required hours, come to the Examination Office and hand in the certificates. We will enter the VP hours into the HISinOne examination system, where you can then track your progress.

If you are studying for a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, you have been using the Sona program since the winter semester 2024/25. Before the introduction of this program, you had a form as for the BA Cognitive Science. If necessary, please bring this to the Examinations Office in addition to the VP hours registered in Sona when you have completed your 40 VP hours. The VP hours will then be entered into your HISinOne account at the Examinations Office.

Please register for your Bachelor's or Master's thesis at the Examinations Office. You can find the application form in the  download area. Talk to your first and second assessors in advance and agree on the subject area on which you would like to write your thesis. The reviewers will support you during the editing process. If you have any difficulties, please get in touch with them.

You have 3 months to complete your Bachelor's thesis and 6 months to complete your Master's thesis.
Before you start writing, please wait for the final topic. You will be informed of this with your admission letter. Please accept the topic word for word. Any deviations must be agreed with the first assessor and reported to the Examination Office immediately.

If you realize in the first month of the thesis that the topic is not accessible to you, you can cancel once and look for a new topic. You should also discuss this with your supervisor in advance.

You will receive a deadline for submitting your thesis with your letter of admission. The printed version of the thesis must be at the Examinations Office by the end of the deadline day. If you wish to send the thesis by post, the date of submission to the post office is decisive. You will also receive information about the number of printed copies in the letter.

If your first and second assessors so wish, please also enclose a digital version of the thesis in PDF format.

The final documents are prepared immediately after receipt of the assessment of the final performance (usually receipt of the reports on the final thesis) at the Examinations Office. These documents must be signed by the Dean and the Chair of the Examination Board. Therefore, it usually takes about 2-4 weeks from receipt of the assessment to delivery of the final documents. You will be informed by e-mail when the final documents are ready for collection. If you are no longer in the vicinity of the university, the Examinations Office will be happy to send you the documents by post.

The final documents for the multi-subject degree programs are issued by the PATMOS multi-subject examination office upon request. Further information and the application form can be found on the  PATMOS website.

You can of course inspect your examination file. An informal request is sufficient for this, but we also provide you with a  form to download, which you are welcome to use.

In your examination file, you will find all the applications you have submitted to the Examination Office and their processing history. These include, for example, certificates, the registration for your Bachelor's and Master's thesis and, last but not least, the reports on your theses. You have the right to take photos/scans or make copies if you wish.

You must be enrolled at the time of the final assessment. You no longer have to be enrolled for the assessment period. However, we recommend that you continue to be enrolled until all your achievements have been assessed and you have your degree certificates in your hands.

Interesting fact: If you complete the last examination within one month of the start of the course, you can exmatriculate retroactively and receive a refund of the fees.

You can find out everything else about enrollment and de-registration at the Admissions  Office.
