Malte Steinbrink

IMIS mourns the loss of its long-standing member Prof. Dr. Malte Steinbrink, holder of the Chair of Anthropogeography at the University of Passau, who passed away unexpectedly on May 4, 2023. He became an IMIS member in 2008 and worked at the Institute of Geography and IMIS until 2018. After moving to Passau, he was a Corresponding Member of IMIS.

Since 1.9.2018 Professor of Anthropogeography at the University of Passau. 2008-2018 Priv. Doz. Dr. phil., social geographer and research associate at the Institute of Geography at Osnabrück University with a focus on development and migration research as well as tourism research and network research. Regional focus of his work: Southern Africa and Brazil.

Studied geography, sociology, business administration and psychology at the Universities of Osnabrück and Kassel; graduated with a degree in geography (with distinction, 2001); research assistant at the University of Bayreuth (DFG project, until 2006); Doctorate at the University of Osnabrück (summa cum laude, 2008); 2011 Professor of Human Geography at the University of Potsdam; member of IMIS since 2008; Senior Research Fellow at the University of Johannesburg since 2014; habilitation and venia legendi in 2015.
