Lower Discrepancy Bounds and the Fourier Transform

In this informal(!) talk I want to present some lower bounds on the discrepancy function

of point configurations in the plane with respect to (rotated and translated) squares.

The focus of the talk is to show how the Fourier transform can be employed to prove sharp lower

bounds that hold for all point configurations (which is typically a notoriously subtle business).

The talk is based on Chapter 7.1 of the (extremely instructive) book "Discrepancy Theory" by the late
Jiri Matousek. (Due to time restrictions there will probably be a second part one week later.)
