Recognition of courses

General:
From time to time, students contact us seeking (general or specific) advice on the recognition of a foreign course. Experience has shown us that there is often a significant discrepancy between the expectations before the course and the actual quality of the course later on. The spectrum ranges from "perfect, but unfortunately taught in the local language", "significant changes to the plan" to "did not take place". Therefore, a final recognition decision can only be made retrospectively.

Before the course:
If you would like to assess in advance what will be recognized, please note:

  • Compulsory courses at UOS are compulsory courses. In order to recognize a foreign course as a compulsory course, a very good and detailed justification would be required. As a rule, I do not recognize foreign courses as compulsory courses.

  • Compulsory elective courses. In this case, you will be asked to specify which UOS course corresponds to the foreign course. You can document this with a script or a syllabus. If there is no real equivalence, but you still consider the course to be relevant for the compulsory elective area, you can explain this on a separate sheet.

  • Elective courses. This area is handled very liberally. As long as the course is roughly relevant, there should be no problem getting it recognized. In this case, you do not need to involve me. You can contact our examination office directly.

After the course:
Once you have completed your semester abroad, please fill out the appropriate recognition form (this can be downloaded from the Examinations Office website). Be sure to be specific about the class hours, your grade, and the research field. Please submit this form to Prof. König (50/208) along with documentation (a PDF is welcome) that includes the actual course content and proof of completion of the course and its grade. I will then check this. If everything is in regulation, I will sign the form or make the necessary changes.

For those of you who have been to an Italian university, here is a table to convert the grades.

For everyone else: We refer to the Business Administration and Economics conversion tables as a guide. However, deviations may occur in individual cases.

If you need further clarification or information in advance, you can also contact me directly: Prof. König.
