Society of Minorities. Living in Superdiversity

IMIS/SFB Lecture with Prof. Dr. Maurice Crul and Frans Lelie (Sociology, VU Amsterdam)

 Video

Our guests are from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam: Maurice Crul is a professor of sociology, specializing in issues of education and diversity. Frans Lelie is a research fellow at the Institute of Sociology, project manager, and editor and lecturer for various film projects and publications. The two have conducted international comparative studies on the subject of school careers and labour market careers among migrant children (e.g.  Elites - Pathways to Success, 2012 to 2015). Since 2017, they had been working on the  Becoming a Minority (BaM) project, which is funded by the European Research Council (ERC), on integrating people without a migration background into ethnically diverse cities in Europe. The BaM project was carried out in the port cities of Rotterdam, Antwerp and Malmö, and in the service sector cities of Amsterdam, Hamburg and Vienna. As part of the research, an international survey was conducted among people living in neighbourhoods where everyone now belongs to a minority: majority-minority neighbourhoods. They published two books on this project: “The New Minority: People Without a Migration Background in the Superdiverse City” (2023,  open access; available also in German and Dutch) and “Gesellschaft der Minderheiten. Leben in der Superdiversität” ( C.H. Beck; available also in Dutch).

We look forward to an intriguing presentation and to the discussion about what happens when old majorities cease to be majorities and how a super-diverse society is constituted beyond the dividing line of migration background or not. Questions that could not be more topical!
