Lecture by Dr. Mert Pekşen (Osnabrück) on the futures of migration

Over 40 participants followed Dr. Mert Pekşen’s lecture on the lives of refugees in Turkish satellite cities, both on-site and online – offering a powerful look at hope, restrictions, and efforts to shape the future under precarious conditions.

Over 40 participants attended Dr. Mert Pekşen’s (Osnabrück) lecture on 18 November, titled "Future-making under precarious conditions: Living as a refugee in Turkish satellite cities". In his talk, Dr. Pekşen analyzed how refugees in Turkey navigate the spatial and temporal restrictions of the country’s asylum system, which confines them to so-called satellite cities.

The lecture offered an impressive insight into how refugees, situated between repression and hope, attempt to actively shape their futures while challenging the boundaries imposed on them. The lively exchange with the many student participants repeatedly highlighted the gap between the anticipated future after resettlement and the experienced reality of restriction.

The event was jointly organized by the IMIB lecture series at the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) at Osnabrück University,  Soli*City, and  FuturMig.
