Dissertation project:
Expectations in Confrontation
In Germany, towards the end of 2015, several governmentally funded projects started focusing on recruiting people with refugee status into the elderly care sector. A sector which for a long time has been in a crisis due to a lack of employees.
This PhD research project focuses on the expectations of Refugee workers in this sector, using the following research question: How do caregivers of the elderly with refugee status perceive, build and confront expectations about their work? Understanding their expectations regarding themselves and their work, helps understand the labor market, as one that is regulated not only by economic interests, but as a space that is socially regulated by perceptions and social imaginaries; what Maruani (2000) calls employment: Who has access or not to work in this labor market? Who is expected to fill the free positions within it? Who has been offered the job and who has not?
