Explain-OS
Experimental learning laboratory in Osnabrück
Biology is the science with the greatest increase in knowledge in recent decades. The most exciting way to learn more about this fascinating subject is to visit a biological research facility. In the “Experimental Learning Laboratory - Explain-OS” in the main biology building on Westerberg (Building 35), which was founded in 2008, visitors gain an insight into scientific approaches and working methods. By conducting their own experiments under the guidance of scientists and student teachers from Osnabrück University, pupils can learn about methods of biological research which can hardly be taught at school, or in many cases not at all due to a lack of equipment. Various experimental courses provide early access to current scientific problems and give the accompanying teachers help and suggestions for designing their lessons. The courses are aimed at learning groups from year 10 onwards. You can see a short introduction in our information film below.
Full-day or multi-day school courses and teacher training courses can also be offered by arrangement. One example of this is the Autumn Academy, which Explain-OS has been taking part in for more than a decade. In 2018, the following documentary film about one such course was made by the students themselves. Special thanks go to Jan Dreier and Maximilian Kröger from Gymnasium Oesede, who edited and set the film to music.
Since 2008, over 15,000 pupils have participated in the various courses offered by our learning lab. The Explain-OS is a member of the LeLa association of school laboratories ( www.lernort-labor.de).
