What is the atmosphere like at the UWI? And what can I expect as a research assistant?
Below you will find some reports from former employees who have already completed their doctorate at the UWI.

Dr. Patricia Kajüter Rodrigues

In 2020, I decided to do a Doctorate at the chair of Prof. Teuteberg. My academic career did not originally start in Information Systems, but in the social sciences with a minor in business administration and a master's degree in empirical social research. I also worked as a research assistant in the innovation fund project ReKo (Regional Care Competence Center) from 2020 to 2024. The project involved setting up and evaluating a care-oriented case management system and a digital ecosystem to support case management processes and communication between the stakeholders involved. This position gave me the opportunity to apply my methodological skills in a practical environment and gain valuable experience. I was initially unsure whether my social science background could be a disadvantage in Information Systems, but the opposite was the case. I was able to successfully contribute my methodological knowledge to the research and thus open up new perspectives. I would particularly like to emphasize here that I would also like to encourage interested parties from "non-scientific" disciplines to pursue a Doctorate with Prof. Teuteberg. The interdisciplinary way of thinking is highly valued here and can lead to innovative research results. Another important aspect of my time as a doctoral student was the exceptional collegial cohesion within the team. The staff were always on hand to offer help and advice, be it on methodological issues, discussing research results or simply exchanging ideas. This supportive atmosphere really helped me to overcome challenges and successfully advance my work. I would particularly like to highlight the prompt and constructive feedback from Prof. Teuteberg. Questions were usually answered promptly and the feedback was precise and helpful. You could always rely on receiving prompt answers to your own questions, which made the work much easier and faster. Overall, my doctoral studies with Prof. Teuteberg were a very enriching and positive experience. The opportunity to write a cumulative dissertation, the appreciative and supportive working atmosphere and the professional supervision helped me to achieve my research goals. I can recommend a Doctorate with Prof. Teuteberg - even if you don't come from a traditional Information Systems background.

Prof. Dr. Jens Mehmann

After leading a research project at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, which resulted in a successful business start-up together with a fellow student, and two years of consultancy work in practice, it was clear that there was a "thirst" to learn something new and take further steps. As a graduate industrial engineer who was increasingly confronted with the challenges of Information Systems in practice, it was obvious to build up further know-how in this segment. The existing knowledge in the field of production engineering, logistics and process optimization was to be supplemented and expanded with knowledge from Information Systems. The search for a doctoral supervisor who would see the supervision of a "non-specialist" doctoral candidate as a challenge and an opportunity proved difficult. Nevertheless, this plan was pursued, which was perceived as a joint challenge together with Prof. Dr. Teuteberg.

After a joint coordination meeting, the subject area was formulated "vaguely", as IT tools, research methods, theories and other content had to be learned first. Nevertheless, Professor Teuteberg was always a good advisor and companion, so that topics and procedures were jointly agreed, implemented by me and finally critically reflected upon.

The reaction time and the meticulousness of the work with Prof. Dr. Teuteberg is and was admirable, whereby results could be generated in the shortest possible time. The collaboration was always accompanied by honest, precise feedback as well as courteous and friendly communication. This was very pleasant and provided one or two motivational boosts.

In retrospect, the intensive collaboration with Prof. Dr. Teuteberg left its mark on me. In addition to the methodological know-how and the technical skills I learned, it was above all personal qualities such as discipline, determination, dealing with criticism and the ability to be self-motivated that were fostered.

Without hesitation and without reservation, I can recommend Prof. Dr. Teuteberg as a supervisor for an external doctorate. This also applies to the UWI chair and in particular to Marita Imhorst (team assistant, secretarial management), who provided excellent support in organizational matters and translations.

Dr. Florian Stiel

As an industrial engineering graduate, I came to the UWI as a doctoral student and employee from outside the field. The freedom Professor Teuteberg gave me in choosing my dissertation topic enabled me to combine the strengths of my studies with the current research projects at the UWI and my personal research interests in the best possible way. Before starting my Doctorate, I had come into contact with the topic of life cycle assessment as a research assistant at the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology and as part of my diploma thesis. As I wanted to continue working on this topic at the UWI, I was given the opportunity to write my dissertation entitled "Life Cycle Assessments as a tool for measuring the ecological impact of information systems" as part of the "IT for Green" and "ecoinnovate IT" projects.

Professor Teuteberg was always available as a contact person during my Doctorate. I usually received answers to my questions by e-mail within a few hours and I received prompt feedback on my work, especially when deadlines were tight. Especially in the first phase of my Doctorate, I was able to benefit from Professor Teuteberg's publication experience. My colleagues at the time had also already gained initial publication experience through the cumulative Doctorate mode and helped me to structure my initial ideas.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Teuteberg, Marita Imhorst, the UWI assistants and my colleagues once again for the wonderful and successful years at the UWI. My Doctorate not only included the everyday work of a research assistant in the office in Osnabrück, but also conference visits to Barcelona and Tel Aviv, a doctoral seminar in Belgium, the co-organization of the largest scientific conference for Information Systems in Germany and countless evenings in the old town of Osnabrück. If you are considering a Doctorate, enjoy scientific work and are personally interested in one of the research topics at the UWI, there is nothing to stop you from applying to the UWI.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Jede

During my studies, I decided quite early on to focus on "Controlling" and "Accounting", as I had gained very good practical experience in the relevant departments, among other things. Immediately after graduating, I followed the call of the free economy and preferred a controller position to an offered PhD opportunity. After four years of working, however, my fingertips twitched again and I decided to go back to "virtual" school. However, I found the idea of a Doctorate in Controlling less enriching, as I had already acquired certain theoretical and practical knowledge in accounting and controlling through my studies and, above all, through my professional activities, which would deepen as my career progressed anyway. I hoped to gain more knowledge through research in related areas. It is no secret that Information Systems is also becoming increasingly important in controlling, so I targeted this area and started looking for a doctoral supervisor.

With fond memories of my studies, Osnabrück University was my first port of call and the initial discussions with Prof. Dr. Teuteberg were very promising. Among other things, one-to-one discussions with other doctoral students and reports of experiences of this kind helped me to further consolidate my positive overall impression and to approach the Doctorate in the field of "Corporate Accounting and Information Systems" full of motivation.

Prof. Dr. Teuteberg was open from the outset when it came to defining the subject area, which suited me enormously, as I had determined an area of research relevant to me early on. Especially in the first year, the support of Prof. Dr. Teuteberg and the staff at the chair was of great importance, as I first had to learn how to work scientifically (including IT tools, research methods, theories, etc.). Success was achieved in the years that followed. Prof. Dr. Teuteberg contributed significantly to the development of my dissertation. Above all, the content-related support, the constructive and very timely feedback as well as the open, honest and friendly communication were extremely helpful throughout the entire Doctorate. In periodic feedback meetings, we jointly assessed the progress of my doctorate and determined the next steps.

If you are also interested in pursuing an external Doctorate in Information Systems, then I can recommend Prof. Dr. Teuteberg's chair to you without reservation. In my opinion, potential applicants for a successful Doctorate should have discipline, determination and a healthy degree of resistance to frustration, and should not have "fallen on their heads".

Prof. Dr. Volker Frehe

When I started working at UWI 4 years ago (in June 2012), I had no idea where this journey would take me. For me, it was a step that I thought about for a long time, as I had previously worked in practice as an IT management consultant for 3 years. In the end, I have to say that this decision has more than paid off. Of course, there is a big difference between working in business and in academia. In business, you usually have concrete goals, planning and fine-grained controlling, but at university, the freedom of teaching and research prevails. At Professor Teuteberg's department, I was able to pursue my own ideas at any time. Of course, you need a lot of intrinsic motivation and a great deal of initiative and self-organization, but there is also an extrinsic factor, not least because of the goal of the Doctorate.

Prof. Teuteberg was always available as a contact person during the Doctorate. The department's promise to answer any queries within 24 hours therefore not only applies to students, but doctoral students in particular receive very substantial feedback here. I was always amazed that Prof. Teuteberg had the same response time at the weekend as during the week. This was particularly useful for conference submissions, as the deadlines here are usually on Sunday evenings/night. It is not unusual to make various adjustments in the last few hours before submission - Prof. Teuteberg was always available as a contact person even at these times. Communication is very straightforward, so that you are sometimes even contacted several times a day by email and, in the event of major problems, you receive a personal appointment within 12-24 hours. In general, all topics at the chair were discussed in detail with the other employees and Prof. Teuteberg in the four-weekly research meetings.

As I had a regional position as a research assistant, my tasks also included supporting teaching. I learned a lot in this area and am glad to have been so closely involved with Prof. Teuteberg. In particular, setting up a new course was a new experience for me. It was very nice to see that Prof. Teuteberg built on my practical experience and that I and my experiences became part of the lecture. Overall, I think that my teaching skills have been very effectively strengthened by the co-supervision.

As part of my 4-year position, I also played a leading role in a third-party funding application. This was a new experience for me, as both the acquisition of third-party funding and the field in question (eHealth in the broader sense) were new territory for me. Prof. Teuteberg also gave me a good introduction to this area. At the beginning, I took on smaller research tasks and in the end I wrote a large part of the application myself. The success of this "on-the-job training" can be seen in the fact that the research proposal was successful and the  Dorfgemeinschaft 2.0 project was ultimately funded by the BMBF with a project volume of €5.82 million.

I would like to expressly thank Prof. Teuteberg for his introduction, support and motivation for the various areas of science and teaching addressed here. I would also like to thank all my colleagues with whom I was able to work for the lively discussions and good cooperation. Last but not least, I would also like to express my gratitude to Marita Imhorst (team assistant, secretarial management) for her daily support with organizational matters and translations.

Dr. Marc Walterbusch

During my studies at Osnabrück University, I was already employed as a student assistant at the Department of Management Accounting and Information Systems (UWI). As a result, I recognized my interest in scientific work at an early stage, which was strongly encouraged by the success of the publication of my Bachelor's thesis (and later also my Master's thesis). This made my decision to do a Doctorate at the UWI relatively easy.

During my time as a research assistant at the UWI from March 2012 up to and including August 2015, I was involved in project work, teaching and the organization of the WI 2015. I submitted my dissertation entitled "Factors Influencing the Adoption of Cloud Computing: A Mixed-Methods Approach" for review in March 2015. This relatively short dissertation period was made possible by the targeted supervision of Prof. Teuteberg, whose response time for inquiries is usually less than 24 hours and also goes beyond the content of the dissertation. The degrees of freedom granted in terms of 'management by objectives/results' were also a key driver, so I was always able to pursue my interests and realize my own ideas.

Overall, I felt at home in the UWI team at all times, not least because of the uncomplicated and collegial interaction with my colleagues here. If I were faced with the decision to do a Doctorate at UWI again today, I would choose it again without hesitation.

Prof. Dr. Daniel Burda

"In 2011, I decided to do my Doctorate as an external doctoral student and received a confirmation of supervision from Prof. Dr. Frank Teuteberg. Parallel to my Doctorate, I worked in the research department at SAP in Zurich.

In addition to the excellent supervision and the freedom I was given in selecting and working on the individual research projects, I would like to thank Prof. Dr. Frank Teuteberg for his constructive feedback and for the always prompt and open communication, which took place almost exclusively via virtual channels. Despite the physical distance between Osnabrück and Zurich and the infrequent personal contact, I felt very well looked after and advised at all times. I also always found the virtual collaboration with colleagues in the department very pleasant.

If you are also considering a Doctorate, I can recommend Prof. Dr. Frank Teuteberg's department to you without reservation and encourage you to apply."

After completing his Doctorate, Dr. Daniel Burda accepted a professorship in Information Systems at the Bern University of Applied Sciences (www.bfh.ch) (focus: Business Process Management/IT Governance).

"I wrote my dissertation entitled "Risk Management in Cloud Computing - A Multi-Method Analysis" under Prof. Dr. Frank Teuteberg at the Department of Management Accounting and Information Systems (UWI). Overall, I can now look back on four successful years of my Doctorate, which I will always remember positively.

At the beginning of my doctoral career, the focus was initially on finding a topic. Prof. Teuteberg gave me a lot of freedom in this regard, but always discussed my topic suggestions constructively with me. The other colleagues in the UWI team were also always there to help and advise me. By actively participating in international scientific conferences in particular, I was able to significantly sharpen my doctoral topic by discussing my research results and also establish research collaborations with other scientists. The UWI's research areas are always very lively, not least due to the high level of practical relevance in teaching - e.g. through practice-relevant topics and guest lectures - and in research - e.g. through expert interviews and case studies. This is also demonstrated by the third-party funded projects that Prof. Teuteberg has acquired to date.

I can highly recommend a Doctorate at the UWI to anyone interested, especially due to the structure-giving supervision and the very good team atmosphere at the UWI."

"I can recommend Prof. Dr. Frank Teuteberg's department to you without reservation!

Very exciting and highly topical research projects are currently underway in the department, from which very interesting dissertation topics can be derived if desired by the doctoral candidate.

During my time at the department, I received excellent supervision from Professor Teuteberg, but I also experienced a very pleasant and dynamic team. Throughout my doctoral studies, I received valuable feedback from Professor Teuteberg at all times and within a very short space of time. Overall, there is a great atmosphere with short communication channels and very good opportunities for a successful Doctorate.

I wish you every success with your application!"

Dr. Michael Freundlieb

"I wrote my dissertation entitled "Status Quo and Development Perspectives of Sustainability Reporting: A Multi-Method Analysis" during my four years as a research assistant at the Department of Management Accounting and Information Systems. The department's team and the excellent supervision by Prof. Dr. Teuteberg created ideal conditions for me to successfully complete my Doctorate: The UWI has a young team that works well and enjoys working together. In the cumulative Doctorate, you are not just a lone fighter, but also write joint contributions with other members of staff. Especially as a newcomer, you can learn a lot from the more experienced members of staff. Prof. Dr. Teuteberg gives constructive feedback as a doctoral supervisor, both on the basic research ideas and specifically on the contributions to be submitted. The department meets approximately every three weeks for a research meeting in which future research ideas are discussed. This is particularly important at the beginning so that you can find a topic for your Doctorate at an early stage and start the actual work as soon as possible.

Working on the dissertation is clearly seen as part of working hours, alongside teaching activities and the acquisition of third-party funding, so that overall the best conditions exist for a successful Doctorate. If you have a certain interest in the research topics of the subject area and enjoy publishing research results, I can only recommend applying to the UWI."

"Prof. Dr. Frank Teuteberg offered me the opportunity to conduct research at the Department of Management Accounting and Information Systems (UWI) as an external doctoral candidate and to publish my results. Based on my experience, I can recommend the department to you without reservation and would like to motivate you to take such a step.

The cooperation with the staff of the department, also as an external doctoral student, was always results-oriented and characterized by a high scientific standard. In particular, the intensive supervision and the short communication channels contributed significantly to the success of my work. Despite my strong professional involvement, I was always included in the research at the UWI. Through Prof. Dr. Frank Teuteberg, I was also able to publish papers together with the EBS University of Business and Law. Furthermore, a professional cooperation with the IT-for-Green joint project was also made possible.

In my experience, as an external doctoral candidate in particular, you should have a high degree of determination and self-organization. Coupled with the flexibility and support of the department, a successful Doctorate and challenging scientific research is possible."
