Since 2019, Inken Bartels has been a research associate in the junior research group The Scientific Production of Knowledge on Migration at IMIS at Osnabrück University. She is researching the production of migration statistics and their impact on the governance of migration in West Africa.
Previously, she worked at IMIS in the BMFSFJ-funded DeZIM project "ExiTT: Exit - Transit - Transformation" on transnational migration processes and their attempts at regulation in Senegal and The Gambia (led by Andreas Pott and Helen Schwenken). In 2018, she completed her doctorate at the Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences (BGSS) of the Humboldt University zu Berlin on the practices of international migration management of the IOM in Morocco and Tunisia (supervision: Gökce Yurdakul and Steffen Mau). She was a lecturer in the Master's program Migration & Diversity at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, at the Institute for Social Sciences at the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and at the University of Hamburg. In 2013-14, she was a visiting researcher at the European University Institute and the Istituto Italiano di Scienze Umane in Florence. Inken Bartels studied political science at the Otto Suhr Institute of the Freie Universität Berlin and the Université de Provence Aix-Marseille I. In her diploma thesis, she examined the international discourse on climate refugees and its political consequences (supervisors: Miranda Schreurs and Bettina Engels).
Her research focuses on the politics of counting, categorizing and governing migration in Africa and is situated at the intersection of international political sociology, international relations, sociology of knowledge and critical migration and border studies. Her book "The International Organization for Migration in North Africa. Making International Migration Management" was published by Routledge in 2022.
