Bediz Yılmaz-Bayraktar hat ihr Bachelorstudium in Politik- und Verwaltungswissenschaften absolviert. Sie promovierte am Institut für Stadtforschung (Universität Paris VIII / 2006) mit einer Dissertation über die soziale Ausgrenzung von Zwangsmigranten (kurdische Binnenflüchtlinge) in einem Slumviertel von Istanbul. Ihre Forschungsinteressen umfassen (Zwangs-)Migration, das Stadt-Land-Kontinuum, räumliche Segregation, soziale Ausgrenzung, Gender und Sozialpolitik. Derzeit beschäftigt sie sich mit dem Zusammenhang zwischen Zwangsmigration und Zwangsarbeit am Beispiel syrischer Flüchtlinge, die in der Landwirtschaft in der Türkei arbeiten, sowie mit den räumlichen Auswirkungen von Zwangsmigrations.

Nach ihrer Tätigkeit als Assistenzprofessorin am Institut für Verwaltungswissenschaften der Universität Mersin von September 2006 bis August 2016 als Assistenzprofessorin am Fachbereich für öffentliche Verwaltung der Universität Mersin tätig war, arbeitete sie als KOSMOS Summer University Fellow am BIM / Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (November 2016 bis Januar 2017) und ist seit Februar 2017 Philipp Schwartz Fellow am IMIS. Seit Januar 2018 ist sie Mitglied des IMIS und seit September 2020 korrespondierendes Mitglied.
