Designing diversity-sensitive and anti-discriminatory teaching

University teaching does not - and increasingly less - take place in socially homogeneous groups. Nevertheless, dealing with diversity at universities is rarely a natural part of the didactic design of courses. In the context of diversity-sensitive teaching, other aspects need to be considered in addition to subject-specific and fundamental (higher education) pedagogical issues. In order to create awareness of this and, despite the frequent lack of time resources on the part of lecturers, to enable them to deal with the topic, the Diversity Working Group, which is part of the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS), has produced a working paper in the form of a handout.

The handout is available for download  here (PDF, 1.22 MB).

The handout provides an introduction to the following questions, among others: What does it mean to deal with diversity in university teaching? What challenges are associated with the requirement to consciously orient courses towards the different requirements of the participants? How can your own teaching be designed to be diversity-sensitive and critical of discrimination in practice? The handout aims to provide suggestions, initiate reflection processes and raise awareness and understanding of diversity and inequality in the teaching-learning setting. It contains concrete impulses for the preparation, implementation and follow-up of diversity-sensitive courses. This offers the opportunity to contribute to the reduction of discrimination and exclusion in the university context - and ultimately to improve the quality of teaching.
