Interdisciplinary institutions and research centers

The Center for the Study of Conflict & Peace (CeCoP), founded at the end of 2011, is an interdisciplinary research institution at Osnabrück University. It deals with the normative, socio-cultural and political-institutional foundations of democracy and peace - both within societies and with regard to the peaceful coexistence of states and societies. The CeCoP is active in the field of democracy, peace and conflict research both in teaching and research as well as with regard to public events, thus serving to further raise the profile of the university in the peace city of Osnabrück University and in the state of Lower Saxony.

As a university research institution, the main activity of the Japan Research Center is to research and publish new findings on Japanese politics, society, culture and economy. Current research focuses on the development of the Japanese party system, social inequality structures as well as social and political transformation processes through globalization and post-modernization. Diploma and master's theses as well as dissertations are supervised on these topics. A cooperation with the local German-Japanese Society and the adult education center makes it possible to offer a wide range of lectures on Japan to the public.

The Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) is an interdisciplinary and interfaculty Research Center at Osnabrück University. Since the early 1990s, the Institute's academic interest has focused on the diverse aspects of spatial mobility and intercultural encounters in the past and present.

The Interdisciplinary Institute of Early Modern Intercultural Studies (IKFN) is dedicated to interdisciplinary research into the early modern period (ca. 1500-1800). It is therefore one of the few German research institutions that explicitly focuses on the early modern period and combines the different perspectives and research interests of several humanities disciplines to create the most multi-faceted picture possible. A total of nine disciplines cooperate at the IKFN: history, German literature, Romance studies, English/American studies, Latin studies, art history, musicology, Protestant theology and Catholic theology.

The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in European Studies was opened at Osnabrück University in the winter semester 2007/08. The institution is funded by the European Commission and Osnabrück University. The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in European Studies aims to promote and deepen research and teaching on issues of European integration at Osnabrück University.
