Senior Researcher, Coordinator of the  FFVT Consortium(Flight and Refugee Research: Networking and Transfer) at the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) at Osnabrück University. From 2018-2020 I was Head of the Migration Department at the German Institute for Integration and Migration Research (DeZIM), Berlin; from 2006-2018 Senior Researcher and since 2014 Associate Professor at the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS), University of Oxford, 2004-2008 Lecturer at the University of Bremen, 2003/04 Jean Monnet Fellow at the European University Institute, Florence, and 1998-2003 Research Fellow at the University of Exeter. I was also a senior researcher at the International Center for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), Vienna (2009-2012), a researcher at the Jonas Widgen Foundation (Netherlands) and at Amsterdam Economics, and an embedded researcher at the Turkish Directorate General for Migration Management (DGMM) (2013/14). I am also Head of the Turkey Migration Studies Network (TurkMiS), Senior Advisor to the Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants ( PICUM) in Brussels, member of the Steering Committees of South East European Studies ( SEESOX) at St Antony's College, Oxford, of  Metropolis, the Border Monitoring Project Ukraine, the Advisory Board of the Migration Research Center of Koc University, Istanbul and the editorial boards of Migration Studies (UK), Journal for Studies in Social Justice (Canada) and the Journal for Social Politics and Sociology (Russia).

I have advised the EU Commission, EU Council, European Council, OSCE/ODIHR, IOM, UNHCR, Unicef, Austrian Home Office, British Parliament and House of Lords, Directorate General for Migration Management in Turkey, MsF, HRW, GIZ, Pro Asyl and many others. Before my academic career, I worked as a social worker for migrants and refugees and was editor of a German journal for development policy. So far, I have conducted over 20 research projects, such as  FFVT,  CrossMigration,  DIEM,  MedMig,  Eumagine and  Clandestino. I have also presented at over a hundred conferences and given 16 keynotes, for example at Metropolis, IMISCOE and EMN. Finally, I have published 10 books, around 50 papers and over 35 book chapters.
