Mass data-based long-term models of migration-induced growing diversity in an urban context: Foreigner registration files as cultural assets and the basis for reflexive migration research

Funding: Ministry of Science and Culture of the State of Lower Saxony (MWK)

Duration: April 2020 to October 2024

Principal Investigators:  Prof. Dr. Christoph Rass and  Prof. Dr. Andreas Pott

The project is based on the digitisation of Osnabrück's analogue foreigner registration file ("Ausländermeldekartei") for the period from 1930 to 1981. AI-based data extraction and GIS-supported modelling enable the tracking of migrants' movements within the city and the analysis of segregation and integration processes, thereby observing the migration-induced social change of an urban society. Furthermore, it is possible to reveal practices of administrative knowledge production about migration in the datafied foreign residents' register.
