OpenVPN with eduVPN configuration

Since April 2020, it has been possible to use the EduVPN service to connect to the Osnabrück University network.

For private devices of employees and students, we recommend following the  instructions of the computer center for eduVPN.

For work notebooks and teleworking stations, however, we recommend using OpenVPN with an eduVPN configuration.

OpenVPN with EduVPN configuration (for service notebooks and teleworking workstations at FB9)

All notebooks and teleworkstations installed by us have been delivered with OpenVPN since 2020. For security reasons, the configuration of the VPN expires after 90 days, so it is necessary to create a new configuration file. The process for renewing the OpenVPN configuration file is described here (link to renewing the OpenVPN configuration file).

If you are not using a VPN solution or are still using an old VPN solution on your company notebook or teleworkstation, we recommend switching to OpenVPN. We will be happy to make the switch for you, please send an email to helpdeskfb9@uni-osnabrueck.de.

Renewal of the OpenVPN configuration file for the use of EduVPN

Instructions

1. open the website  eduvpn.uni-osnabrueck.de and log in with your
computer center ID.

As the EduVPN is connected to the Lower Saxony Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure (Nds-AAI), you may be presented with terms of use and a data transfer declaration. Confirmation of these steps is required to use the EduVPN service.

2. select the profile "Uni-Netz" + "OpenVPN (Prefer UDP)" and assign a name. In our case we use the PC name. Then click on "Download".
Note: If you have SAP access, please select the "SAP" profile instead of "Uni-Netz".

3. the old configuration must now be replaced by the new one. To do this, we first cut out the new configuration file from the downloads. And navigate to the path C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config-auto.

4. the old configuration file should already be in the folder, which we then delete. First we add the new file, which requires admin rights. If you do not have admin rights, please contact us so that we can support you at this point.

Note: If the config-auto folder does not exist for you, you have an old version of OpenVPN. In this case, please send us an e-mail to  helpdeskfb9@uni-osnabrueck.de.

5. you must then delete the old configuration file. This requires admin rights again.

Now the old config file must be replaced by the new one. To do this, we first cut out the new config file under Downloads.

Now go to the path: C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config-auto in the folder for the configuration files. The new file is inserted there and the old file is deleted.

If the config-auto folder does not exist, you have installed an old version of Open VPN. In this case, please contact IT support.

OpenVPN is now correctly configured for use on the university network. For the new configuration to work, a final restart of the computer (alternatively: restart of the "openvpnservice" service) is required.
