Iryna Lapshyna hat einen Doktortitel in Internationaler Wirtschaft. Sie ist Dozentin an der Ukrainischen Katholischen Universität (Lviv). Zuvor war Iryna als leitende Forscherin bei COMPAS an der Universität Oxford tätig, wo sie an dem vom ESRC finanzierten Projekt „Does immigration enforcement matter? Irregular immigrants and control policies in the UK” (2016–2017) mitarbeitete.
Außerdem war sie Stipendiatin der British Academy und schloss ein Projekt über die ukrainische Diaspora im Vereinigten Königreich und in Polen ab („Do Diasporas matter? Exploring the potential role of Diaspora in the reform and post-conflict reconstruction of Ukraine”, 2015–2016).
Zuvor arbeitete sie als nationale Expertin an einem von der EU finanzierten FP7-Projekt mit dem Titel „Imagining Europe from the outside” (2010–2013). Von 2002 bis 2014 war sie Associate Professor an der Lviv Academy of Commerce in der Ukraine. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Arbeitsmigration, irreguläre Migration, individuelle Wahrnehmungen und Bestrebungen, Diaspora, Korruption und Humankapitalentwicklung.
Seit 2022 ist sie korrespondierendes Mitglied des IMIS. Im Jahr 2022 erhielt sie ein Forschungsstipendium der VolkswagenStiftung, um die Ursachen der Zwangsvertreibung aus der Ukraine nach Deutschland zu untersuchen
