Program Description

If you think Geography is the best minor subject in the world—or at least a pretty great one—then you’re in the right place!
Here you'll find key information about studying Geography as a minor, including details on the application process and how Geography fits as a focus subject within various degree programs.

Study Programs

Geography is one of the possible core subjects of Elementary Social Studies and Science with a total of 15 CP. The study of this subject is structured as follows:

  • Module GEO-SU-12: One of three possible lectures on the "Fundamentals of Physical Geography/Geoecology", participation in the written examination (3 CP)
  • Module GEO-SU-13: One of three possible lectures on the "Fundamentals of Human Geography", participation in the written exam (3 CP)
  • Module GEO-25: Lecture "Regional Geography", participation in the written exam (3 CP), participation in two excursion days (together 1 CP)
  • Module GEO-STM-SU3: Project seminar in Geography Didactics (including 4 to 5 field days) for students of Elementary Social Studies and Science (5 CP)

Geography as a Minor in the Bachelor's Program in European Studies

The minor subject Geography within the Bachelor's degree program in European Studies comprises 45 credit points (CP) (see the program-specific examination regulations for further details). The current course overview  overview (PDF, 13.32 kB) (Summer Semester 2025) provides guidance on the recommended study path, as well as information on examinations and grade relevance.

Changes Starting Winter Semester 2025/26

Beginning in Winter Semester 2025/26, the structure of the minor Human Geography will change. This includes updates to modules, individual components, and the recommended semester sequence. You can find the updated course overview for WS 2025/26   overview from WS 2025/26 (PDF, 42 kB). The revised module descriptions will be published shortly.

During the transition period, individual arrangements (e.g. recognition of coursework) will be made in coordination with the Department of Geography, the European Studies program coordinators, and the Examination Office. In addition, current courses will continue to be offered for a limited time.

In the B.Sc. Environmental Systems Science program, you can choose individual Geography modules as part of the interdisciplinary compulsory elective area. A regularly updated list of approved and creditable modules is available on the Environmental Systems Science program’s website  Environmental Systems Science.

In the B.Sc. Business Administration and Economics program, you can choose the minor subject "Economic Geography". It consists of a lecture on economic geography (3 CP), an intermediate seminar on economic geography (4 CP) and a further lecture on human geography (3 CP).
