Aquatic Ecology and Geoarchaeology

On this page, you will find information about our research focus areas: aquatic ecology, paleoecology, and geoarchaeology.

As the name implies, our work at the Institute of Geography integrates these interconnected fields. Further details about our research are organized below according to each specific area.

Aquatic Ecology

In the field of aquatic ecology, our studies focus on inland wetlands such as lakes, rivers, and their floodplains. Key areas of research include the morphological, chemical, and ecological assessment of watercourses in accordance with the European Water Framework Directive (WFD), as well as the impact of invasive species on native aquatic communities. These topics provide a crucial foundation for developing sustainable management strategies for Central European inland waters, particularly those affected by disturbances.

Paleoecology and Geoarchaeology

Paleoecological research primarily addresses when, how, with what intensity, and where humans have influenced landscape development, as well as the resulting consequences for specific epochs and regions.

In geoarchaeology, we employ exploratory geophysical methods to locate and delineate archaeological sites and features. Additionally, our scientific approaches enhance the analysis of archaeological findings and help contextualize them within the broader landscape.
