Freiheit im Wandel? Intergenerationeller Dialog über planetare Grenzen und Verantwortung (SHIFT)
Project description
The SHIFT project brought generations together to explore the complex interactions between planetary boundaries and individual freedom. In collaboration with the environmental education center "Nackte Mühle" of the Lega S and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of the Science Year Freedom, the project promoted the exchange between pupils and senior citizens. The aim was to reflect together on environmental responsibility and the impact of human activity on our planet and our freedom.
Kick-off in Osnabrück
The project kicked off with an interactive day at the "Nackte Mühle" environmental education center in Osnabrück. Various educational activities stimulated exchanges between young and old. It quickly became clear how valuable this dialog is. One senior commented: "This kind of dialog is essential." An eighth-grade student summarized his impressions: "I learned that there are different perspectives on the topic - some I understand, others I can relate to, others I don't agree with." You can also read a report on this in the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung NOZ or watch the short report on NDR.
Learning through participation
During the project, interactive stations and workshops on topics such as water consumption, biodiversity and energy production provided new experiences. Supported by trainee teachers and the SHIFT team, these formats offered deeper insights into the topic of planetary boundaries. Participants were particularly impressed by the variety of methods: "The variety of methods without pointing fingers was a big plus and inspired a rethink," emphasized one participant.
Sustainable education
The main result was educational materials that can be used as inspiration and a conceptual basis for intergenerational dialog projects. Proven educational principles were combined with innovative approaches - for example with the "Photovoice" method. This method enabled participants to record their everyday lives in pictures and visually document changes in their living environment.
A project for dialog between generations
At the final event, the findings were not only presented, but also brought to life through an interactive exhibition. Under the direction of Prof. Britta Höllermann and the SHIFT project team, the participants were able to develop new perspectives in intergenerational discussions on the understanding of freedom in the context of planetary boundaries. The SHIFT project impressively demonstrated the importance of intergenerational exchange in order to find joint solutions to the challenges of the future.
