Environmental and Remote-Sensing Data-Analysis Using Digital Geotechnologies in Research and Teaching (GeoTraining)
Starting in September 2025 and continuing in 2026, Osnabrück University will welcome 25 scholarship holders as part of the DAAD-funded "Geotraining" project. This innovative continuing education program is designed for professionals from Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, Southeast, and South Asia. It focuses on the analysis of environmental and remote sensing data using state-of-the-art digital geotechnologies.
The rapid growth of open data initiatives and citizen science is opening up unprecedented opportunities, which we actively integrate into our research and teaching. "Geotraining" not only delivers in-depth expertise in biodiversity and ecology but also strengthens key competencies in university teaching, science communication, and teamwork. Participants are thoroughly prepared to tackle the challenges of environmental analysis and its crucial role in addressing development-related issues.

During an eight-day seminar in Nairobi—organized by the Geography Didactics Working Group at Osnabrück University, in collaboration with Goethe University Frankfurt and Kenyatta University Nairobi—African DAAD alumni will explore how eLearning technologies can be harnessed to better understand and address the challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss.
Participants will engage with innovative methods such as e-portfolios, artificial intelligence, and virtual and augmented reality to develop concepts that make university teaching on climate and sustainability more accessible and impactful.
Following the seminar, they will travel to the eLearning Africa Conference in Rwanda, where they will lead their own workshop and present the digital tools they have developed. As multipliers, they will help integrate digital technologies into university teaching in the long term, continuing to share and expand their knowledge within their home institutions.
Freedom in Transition? Intergenerational Dialogue on Planetary Boundaries and Responsibility (SHIFT)
Project Duration: 04/2024 - 11/2024
Funded by: BMBF
Directed by: Prof. Dr. Britta Höllermann and Prof. Dr. Christian Dorsch
Contact person: Prof. Dr. Britta Höllermann
The SHIFT project fosters intergenerational dialogue between female students and senior citizens to reflect on how planetary boundaries impact individual freedoms. Using the participatory “Photovoice” method, participants document their daily lives to explore how global environmental changes affect their personal freedoms.
The project aims to raise awareness of intergenerational justice and promote a sense of responsibility toward future generations. As part of the educational format, participants develop competencies related to human–nature relationships. The project concludes with a final presentation that facilitates a meaningful exchange of perspectives between the two generations.
