Geography Didactics

In geography didactics, our research focuses on two main areas: transformative education and racism-critical education. We examine both within the context of a culture of digitality, guided by the key questions: What competencies do students need to act responsibly in the digital world, and how can geographical education contribute to developing these skills.

In the first research focus, transformative education, we explore young people's perspectives on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A key emphasis is placed on the role of change agents within the school context and the significance students attribute to these figures—compared to other actors and themselves—in the process of implementing the SDGs. We also investigate informal learning processes related to climate and climate change that occur within digital communities such as Fridays for Future, and examine how these insights can be effectively integrated into transformative geography education.

The second focus area addresses the professionalization of prospective geography teachers through a racism-critical lens, with particular attention to informal learning processes in the context of digitality.

Content focus: Education in digitality, transformative education/ESD, barriers to action in the context of sustainability, racism-critical education

35th International Geographical Congress in Dublin, Ireland

From August 24–29, the International Geographical Congress (IGC) was held in the vibrant city of Dublin. The Working Group on Geographical Human-Environment Research, represented by Prof. Britta Höllermann and Andrew Asaviansa, and the Working Group on Geography Didactics, represented by Prof. Christian Dorsch and Lydia Heilen, took part in the event. They presented their research findings to colleagues from all over the world in three lectures on the topics of Flood Risk Management in Ghana's Vulnerable Regions, Water-Energy-Food Nexus Approach to Dam Development in Ghana and the ongoing BMBF project Shift(Intergenerational dialogue on planetary boundaries and responsibility). Day excursions took them to the Cliffs of Moher, the Howth Cliff Walk and Glendalough. Naturally, no trip to Dublin would be complete without a visit to a traditional pub. Slàinte!
