Prof. Dr. Joachim Härtling
Professor of Physical Geography with a focus on Climatology/Hydrology
Head of the Physical Geography working group with a focus on climatology/hydrology
Main research areas: Water quality / water protection, paleolimnology, geoarchaeology, environmental planning and assessment
Spatial focus: Northwest Germany, North America
After studying in St. Catherines, Canada (B.Sc. Geography and Physical Education), Freiburg (State Examination Geography, Sport and Education) and Kingston, Canada (M.Sc. Physical Geography), Joachim W. Härtling worked at the Institute for Environmental Health at the Technical University of Ryerson, Toronto. Back in Germany, he completed his Doctorate in Giessen in 1992 on environmental aspects of water supply, wastewater disposal and waste management in the Canadian Arctic and his habilitation in Freiburg in 1998 on heavy metal pollution of near-surface sediments in Lake Ontario. From 1995 to 2000 he ran an environmental planning company in Freiburg with his wife, Nicole Hess, Dipl. Ing. Agr.
Joachim W. Härtling has been Professor of Physical Geography at Osnabrück University since 2001. After serving as Head of Institute, Dean of Studies, Dean and Senator, he represented the University as Vice President for Studies and Teaching from 2012 to 2017. One focus of his work in university management was the development of flexible and effective quality management in studies and teaching.
His research focuses on the combination of palaeoecology and geoarchaeology as part of investigations into the development of natural and cultural landscapes since the High Glacial period. Other fields of research include the hydromorphological and chemical assessment of watercourses within the framework of the Water Framework Directive. Joachim W. Härtling also works on procedures and methods of environmental assessment and the development of environmental target systems.
