Osnabrück University invites you to a discussion event

The We in the migration society

On Wednesday, May 14, at 7 p.m., Osnabrück University and the Bundeskanzler-Helmut-Schmidt-Stiftung (BKHS) are hosting the discussion event "Challenge accepted: The We in the Migration Society" at the Westerberg Departmental Library.

The event is part of the accompanying program to the touring exhibition "#ChallengingDemocracy - From Helmut Schmidt to today", which can be seen from 5 May to 21 June 2025 at the Westerberg site of the University Library, Nelson-Mandela-Platz 1. Both the exhibition and the discussion event are free to visit; registration is not required.

The panel discussion will focus on the challenges and opportunities of an inclusive migration society. Starting with the course set in the 1970s and 1980s, an arc will be drawn to the present day, in which migration and diversity are central social issues. The aim is to discuss ways to create a positive narrative of the migration society and to develop strategies against the instrumentalization of migration in times of crisis.

The experts discussing will be Dr. Noa K. Ha, Scientific Managing Director of the German Centre for Integration and Migration Research (DeZIM); Dr. Patrice G. Poutrus, Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies, Osnabrück University; Prof. Dr. Lale Yildirim, Professor of Didactics of History, Kiel University and Collaborative Research Centre 1604 Production of Migration. Dr. Magnus Koch, Head of Exhibitions and History at the BKHS, will moderate the event.

The traveling exhibition "#ChallengingDemocracy - From Helmut Schmidt to today" sheds light on the biography of Helmut Schmidt's work and links historical debates in the Federal Republic with current challenges to democracy. The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive range of educational activities, including an escape game, guided tours for school classes and a democracy consultation. Local partners are the University Library and the Chair of Modern History and Historical Migration Research, Prof. Dr. Christoph Rass and team.

Further information on the event and the exhibition can be found on the website of the Bundeskanzler-Helmut-Schmidt-Stiftung:  www.helmut-schmidt.de/en/
