Pre-Sessional German language course

The Pre-Sessional German language course enables you to get to experience student life in Osnabrück before the semester starts, while working on your German language skills together with other international students. We cordially invite all international students, doctoral candidates and postdocs, to participate, who are enrolled for the winter semester 2026/2027 at the Osnabrück University.

The language courses at CEFR levels A1 and A2 focus on all four language competences (reception, production, interaction and mediation) and aim to prepare you linguistically for the most important activities in everyday and university life in Osnabrück. At CEFR levels B1 and B2 you will focus more specifically on language issues and typical situations related to your studies. Each language course comprises 52 teaching units.

The Pre-Sessional German language course will be held from 7 until 25 September 2026.

Language lessons are usually from Monday to Friday between 9 am and 12 pm, so that you have time to spend the afternoons exploring the city and its surroundings. As part of our leisure programme, you can expect (among other things) a delicious welcome breakfast, an exciting treasure hunt, speed friending, a pub quiz, an evening with boardgames, weekend getaway, as well as pottery painting.

Course organization and credits

All language courses are assessed and graded, and you can receive 6 ECTS credits for your successful participation.

Participation fee, registration, and payment

The participation fee for the Pre-Sessional 2026 is € 215. The price covers the entire language course, including all learning materials, and the activities in the leisure programme. Please transfer the participation fee by 18 August 2026.

To ensure that you can get around Osnabrück and Germany during the intensive course in September, we recommend that you purchase a Deutschland-Ticket for the month of September, which currently costs € 63 and can be purchased via the  Deutsche Bahn website or in their app.

You will also need to arrange your own health insurance and accommodation. Have you applied for a room in one of the student residences run by the Osnabrück Student Services Association via the International Office? If so, you should rent your room as of 1 September 2026 so that you can stay in the residence during the Pre-Sessional.

To register for the Pre-Sessional 2026, simply fill out the form below. Please also indicate whether you have already learned German so that we can offer you a course at the right level. If you have applied for a room in the student residence, please register by 1 July 2026. If you do not plan to stay in the student residence, you can register until 30 July 2026. Once you have submitted your registration, you will automatically receive a copy for your reference by email.

A few days after the registration deadline on 1 July 2026, we will contact you by email. This email will contain your official registration confirmation, the programme, and your invoice.

We offer language courses at different proficiency levels. While choosing a course, it is important to consider your previous knowledge. Please tick the box that applies to you.

You have indicated that you have no previous knowledge of German. You will participate in the A1.1 level course and learn how to introduce yourself to other people, talk about your family and friends, and describe your daily routine.

You have indicated that you have previous knowledge of German. Everyone with previous knowledge of the German language has to take an online placement test. Based on the result, you will be assigned to one of our courses. You can find a  sample test at onSET website. We will send you access to the placement test by email together with your registration confirmation. The test is free of charge. You must take the test by August 12, 2026, at the latest.

However, if you have already passed a language exam (e.g. TestDaF, telc, or Goethe-Zertifikat), you do not need to take the placement test. We will then assign you to the appropriate course based on the results of your language exam. Please send us a copy of your certificate by August 12, 2026, to   intensivkurs@uos.de.
